About

NDA Group is a New Zealand based group of companies which is a world leader in the engineering fabrication of high precision process vessels and heat exchangers for industry, and the provision of other specialist products and services to key markets around the world. It currently employs over 700 staff with operations in NZ, Australia and North America.

Our story.

NDA’s story starts as far back as 1894, when it was established in Hawera, Taranaki, as a co-operative for New Zealand’s primary sector. It was a production hub for the farming industry, supplying everything from gumboots to tea leaves.

By the 1950s NDA had channelled its focus to manufacturing stainless steel vessels and vats for the burgeoning New Zealand dairy industry. The merging of co-operatives into single, larger entities created a need for vessels of greater capacities, and NDA seized this opportunity.

Over the years, NDA’s co-operative ownership structure took a few twists and turns. In 1998, the group of dairy companies that owned NDA decided they no longer needed the infrastructure. So then-CEO Gary Mollard led a management buyout as part of a strategic plan to take its specialist products to the international market.

A new global era for NDA.

By 2003, turnover had almost doubled, and the globalisation strategy was gaining momentum. To enable further growth, the Group started work on a capital restructure. In April 2007 Sydney-based Pemba Capital Partners acquired 60% of the Group, with the management team retaining 40% ownership.

Later that year, NDA acquired Southern Heat Exchanger Corporation (SHECO), a market-leading manufacturer of shell and tube heat exchangers for the chemical industry based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

In 2008 NDA looked closer to home and acquired Crown Sheetmetal, a wine and dairy tank specialist fabricator with workshops in Invercargill and over the Tasman in Melbourne. With that acquisition, NDA gained full ownership of Truform Stainless in Blenheim – another fabricator serving the wine industry, and previously a joint venture between NDA and Crown Sheetmetal.

NDA’s presence in Australia was intensified by its acquisition of Adelaide-based Pipetech, a specialist in the design and manufacture of pressure vessels for the mining, oil and gas industries.

That’s just the beginning.

NDA has come a long way from its grassroot beginnings in Taranaki, gaining capabilities over the years that allow us to service most industries all over the world.

We are already Australasia’s largest stainless steel fabricator, and we know that in the future our resources will only grow. For more than 100 years, we have provided superior products and services to our customers – and that will never change.
